Chant and Rhythm

I started to become interested in this type of poetry after reading a book of Native American stories. Native American stories are verb oriented. In a story something is always happening and in chants of any kind the repetition brings out that verb. It isn't only Native American literature that is verb oriented. Native American given names are, too. I love the idea that people are identified not just by what they are, but what they do. You see this in English family names, but more as an occupation than a distinguishing characteristic of an individual. Nevertheless, those ideas have influenced the following group of poems.

The Music We Want to Be

listening to music flow through my head a
mix of jealousy of envy of joy of
love for the sport---
sports
we admire it---
them
admire it the beauty want
to be it ourselves want
to be it make it flaunt it be---

loved as well

watch them move fingers of
the music through my head a
trail from the fingers on the keys a
tragedy now a comedy a smile now a movement of
the dance---
the sport---
sports
we admire them
moving that way want
to be that ourselves want
to be beautiful ourselves want
to do it be it live it make it flaunt it and be---

loved as well

we watch them move fingers over
someone else's skin and
we want to be them want
it to be our skin want
it to be us the beauty is
we watch the fingers glide over the keys making
the music we want to be

Exposure

You have to be exposed
Exposed to the art
You have to be exposed
To reason
Before you can make it see it feel it
You have to be exposed
to be it

You have to be exposed
Exposed to the music
You have to be exposed
To the sport
Before you can run it sing it dance it
You have be exposed
to be it

Exposure is fear
Exposure is life
Exposure is human flailing
You avoid it you embrace it
You fear it you cherish it
Exposure is human wailing

Exposure is cold
Exposure is white
Exposure is human feeding
You fear it you embrace it
You avoid it you cherish it
Exposure is human being

You have to be exposed
Exposed to the things
You have to be exposed
To life
Before you can sculpt it draw it make it
You have to be exposed
to be it

You have to be exposed
Exposed to the risk
You have to be exposed
to death
Before you can fear it train it work it
You have to be exposed
to live it

Before you can live
you have to be exposed
you have to be exposed
to life
to live it

Brown Horse Running

Wind breath sweat
Brown horse run
Brown horse run to the way
The way that leads to the river
The way that leads to the plain
The way that leads back home
Wind breath sweat
Brown horse run back home

Breath sweat wind
Horse runs home
By the river horse runs
By the plain horse runs
By the house horse runs
Past the fence horse runs
Horse runs home

We can see where you're going
Brown horse running
But we can't go there

Sweat breath wind
Brown horse runs
Brown horse runs to the way
Across the river
Across the plain
Past the house
Past the fence
Brown horse runs back home

We can see where you're going
Brown horse running
But we can't go there

Can you tell them we love them
Brown horse
When you get there?

Brown horse runs home
